Garden Birds

Some good species being recorded in the garden over the last few days. Lesser Redpoll seen only twice this year. Also an interesting partial leucistic Goldfinch. Daily Goldcrest is a real joy. Nice to see a Robin frequenting a nest box for the first time. I hope she makes it her home this spring

New Nikon Kit!

Just spent 5 minutes playing with new Nikon D7000 and Nikkor 300mm F4 lens with Nikon TC-14E teleconverter and already impressed. These pics shot at ISO 6400 in dark garden light. Streets ahead of my old kit. Interesting leucistic Goldfinch too

Also noticed one of our Robins has a deformed foot

Garden Goldcrest

Nice selection of garden birds today in poor light. Great to have a Goldcrest feeding daily. Amazing to think this 6g in weight bird may have come from Scandinavia to spend its winter here.

Crossbill

Had a look at the feeders at Binn Green this afternoon in the mist. Plenty of Siskins and Goldfinch plus 2 Lesser Redpoll. Best bird though was a lovely female Crossbill feeding on a larch tree nearby. I must remember to bring the camera. Other local news was of a Long eared Owl on my doorstep at Dovestone seen yesterday by the warden. Great pics on RSPB web site taken yesterday. I'm going to have a look tomorrow.
